On average, you’re going to see a rate of $75-$100 per square foot. Where you land in that range depends on what options and materials you pick. Not only does the square footage of your deck matter but the shape of your deck does too. For example, the shape of your deck may include, bump-outs, cut corners, or curves. All of these details increase the cost of your project even if it’s the same square footage as a more simple deck. That’s because of wasted material, intricate framing, more cutting, and increased labor hours. Railing can vary anywhere from $50-$80 a linear foot. In addition to the railing, you need to account for the stairs. If your deck is on the first story, you are looking at anywhere from $2,000-$4,000. If you have a second story deck, there will be more stair treads and a slight chance you may need a landing. You can’t escape permits, they’re required for every county. Depending on which county you live in, your permit can cost anywhere from $50-$500. Even though it’s a small piece of the pie, it can still catch you off guard! Finally, when budgeting for a deck, you want to account for labor costs. No matter the contractor or company you go with, you are paying for their skills, expertise, and time. If you want your labor costs to be as low as possible, make sure your deck is simple. The simpler the design, the quicker the carpenters will complete your deck, resulting in efficient use of time. The average deck builder cost is anywhere from 40-60% of materials.
