What Is a Pergola?
Pergolas are great shade solutions for areas that get hit with direct sunlight, like walkways and pools, or pergolas on decks.
A pergola is generally characterized by the supporting columns or posts, with rafters spanning overhead at intervals that allow sunlight to filter through. This allows you to maintain an unobstructed view while enjoying your shade. Pergolas can be freestanding, but you’ll often see pergolas on decks or attached to houses.
Smaller freestanding pergolas and arbors are often used along paths to add drama to the landscaping. Plants and flowering vines can be trained to grow up and over the pergola, providing even more shade.

What Is a Pavilion?
