After a careful thought out back yard design, it was finally time to begin construction. The architect had designed a covered porch with massive beams and a rustic feel. The deck had to match the same look and feel. The homeowners did not want to do a lot of maintenance in the future so we selected materials that would accomplish the desired feel yet give them the low maintenance and easy care that they desired.
Our approach was that the materials facing the patio and back yard should be real and rustic in feel. Rough sawn cedar was chosen for the deck support columns, fascia, and railing posts. To give the cedar longevity we stained all sides of the boards before they were installed. For the rails we installed powder coated aluminum railing. This would give us the timeless look of a wrought iron rail without the maintenance. What we were able to do is create the same look and feel of the covered porch area by carrying out the same details and similar materials.
On the decking, Trex Transcends in Spiced Rum was selected since it mimicked the look of a stained cedar board. Under the decking a drain system was installed so that the area under the deck would stay dry. The ceiling was then finished and lighting was added for the night time events.
The screened in gazebo off the master bedroom had the same materials but a solid recessed panel knee wall was installed to give the homeowners privacy.
For access to the lower level an aluminum spiral staircase was erected. The benefits of a spiral staircase is that it does not take up much room. Nor does it obstruct the view from the underside of the deck. Aluminum is preferred over steel because it does not rust and we like the durability of a powder-coated finish.
In the end we had quite a stunning back yard. With all the different areas weaving into a master plan all working together to create a beautiful retreat for this family and their children. We felt honored to be a part of this project.
