Ohio City Rooftop Deck

This rooftop deck project was installed on top of the Fries and Schuele’s building in Ohio City. There was an existing wood deck that was in need of some attention and ultimately our client decided to start from scratch and cover the same footprint, but then expand the deck to an upper level. To do this, a staircase was required that led up onto the roof of a penthouse suite.

Being part of a homeowners association, many choices were already made. The railing needed to be exactly the same as the other units, and the decking material needed to be a version of grey. Our client chose Azek decking in slate gray, which would give him the low-maintenance he desired when paired with the required aluminum rail.

Our client’s unit was located toward the center of the building so a crane could not reach the location. There was no choice but to move all the material by hand, up and down the elevator to the 6th floor. The old deck had to be disassembled and taken down by hand and the new deck materials would be carried up on the return trip. After spending a couple of days moving materials up and down, construction was ready to start. Being a mid-summer project, construction was smooth-sailing, and it was completed with time to spare. The railing had to be custom ordered, which ended up taking a few weeks to fabricate. For obvious reasons the deck was off limits until the railing could be installed.

Once the entire project was complete, our client was ready relax on his new multi-level deck and enjoy his incredible view of Cleveland.
