In preparation for retirement, this couple wanted to create a low-maintenance backyard. They had an existing wood deck which was original to the home. With their children grown and married, and with more grandkids on the way, they decided a complete tear out would be best to make room for a completely new deck design.
They were looking for something larger and grander than what they were used to. They wanted to incorporate a built-in kitchen area as well as a screened-in porch to provide protection from bugs. The existing tree, which the family had learned to love, had to stay. Although it made a mess in the fall, the shade it offered was worth the hassle of leaves on the deck.
Trex Transcends decking was selected for its deep rich color and wood-like texture, along with a matching Trex Transcends railing system with black aluminum balusters. Benches were included, to allow some extra room for overflow seating when the extended family would come together. The convex curves on the deck allow a natural flow into the backyard.
Living in Northeast Ohio, this family realized that their time to enjoy the outdoors is always going to be limited by our hot, humid summers and harsh winters, so the second phase of this project will be to install a patio and fire pit at the base of the steps. This will help extend their deck use into the seasons with cooler evenings and will allow for more space should the tribe grow even larger.
